Guwahati, Jul 3: Spanish midfielder Jose Manuel ‘Chema’ Nunez is set to represent NorthEast United FC in the upcoming 2025–26 season. The 27-year-old has finalized a one-year contract with the Highlanders, which includes an option for an additional year.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the transfer, Chema stated, “I’m thrilled to start this new journey with NorthEast United FC. I’ve heard wonderful things about the club, its dedicated supporters, and the region’s passion for football. Conversations with the coach convinced me that this was the right step for my career. I’m eager to help the team achieve its goals and create memorable moments together.”
Originating from Seville, Chema developed his skills at the renowned Sevilla FC youth academy. He has played for various Spanish teams, including Real Betis ‘B’, Albacete, and most recently, Antequera CF in Spain’s third division, the Primera Federacion. Known for his creativity and playmaking skills, Chema accumulated over 3,000 minutes of playtime in the 2024–25 season, contributing 1 goal and 10 assists, showcasing his impact in the attacking phase.
Head coach Juan Pedro Benali expressed confidence in Chema’s abilities, stating, “Chema is a technically skilled player who will enhance our midfield with his creativity and control. His knack for breaking down defenses and managing the game’s tempo will be invaluable for us. We are excited to welcome him to the Highlanders’ family.”
Mandar Tamhane, CEO of NorthEast United FC, shared similar views, saying, “We are thrilled to have Chema join NorthEast United FC. Chema is anticipated to join the squad for pre-season training in Guwahati, commencing on July 13, as NorthEast United FC prepares to assemble a competitive lineup for the new season.
